Description

After reading so many good things about the QHY 268M, it seemed a worthy successor to my venerable ASI1600. I finally took the plunge and ordered one. When the package finally arrived (courtesy of Woodland Hills Camera and Telescope) the generous amount of adapters, hardware and accessories QHY included seemed overwhelming. While the bolt-together design has some advantages over threaded parts, assembly is not straightforward. One has to take the CFW3 filter wheel completely apart to attach the camera. After some assistance from Simon at Woodland Hills Telescope and a few nights of trail and error, I finally found the optimal configuration for my gear (see revision B photo).

I'm impressed with the CCD-like low noise, resolution and dynamic range of this camera. The 16 bit depth appears to make a difference. I was actually startled at the lack of noise for such short integration time. This means hours less total exposure time to achieve a decent quality image. What a time saver!

I'm looking forward to using the QHY 268M during summer nebula season.

Description: The QHY 268M, QHYCFW3 filter wheel and QHY medium OAG as I connected them to the Stellarvue SFFR.74 field flattener/reducer. To achieve the correct back focus distance, 5mm (with M 48 female threads), 10mm and 1mm spacer rings were added. With the filter wheel (17MM), OAG (10MM) and sensor setback (12.5MM), the total back focus distance is 55.5mm.
